Le Tour du monde des danses urbaines en dix villes with Ana Pi

“Let’s take a trip around the world of urban dance.

What is urban dance, you might ask? Simply put, it is any dance that is created, practiced and performed in the streets of the world’s biggest cities. Out of a countless number, we have chosen 10 such cities. This choice was difficult, subjective, and incomplete by definition.

Urban dance is linked to the city, its violence, its injustice, but also to its energy and electricity. Above all, urban dance is linked with music, which always inspires this form of dance and social interaction. Nowadays, the spread of urban dance takes place primarily on the internet (Youtube, Facebooke pages, etc). This virtual transmission allows for rapid stylistic evolution and explains the spectacular popularity of certain styles within the new globalization of movement.

Urban dances in South America, in the United States, in Europe, in Asia, and in Africa are always connected to the diverse body of african dance, which migrated with the continent’s deported slaves and immigrants. These forms of urban dance were invented in the world’s most cosmopolitan cities, shaped by waves of deportation and immigration. The complex heritage of this profoundly unequal social order can also be seen, rising to the surface in these dances.”
